Tokyo's Government Workers to Get Four-Day Weeks

Exercise 2. Article

Tokyo's Government Workers to Get Four-Day Weeks
Local government employees in Tokyo will get more flexible work schedules from next year, in a move that officials hope will make life easier for working mothers.

Tokyo Governor Yuriko Koike announced plans to change the system so that "nobody has to give up their careers due to life events such as childbirth and child care."

Many government workers in the capital can already choose their start and finish times on some days, as long as they work 155 hours over four weeks.

At the moment, this system allows employees to take one day off every four weeks. But from April 2025, they'll be able to work four-day weeks.

In a speech at the start of December, Koike spoke about the importance of supporting female workers.

She said: "Empowering women, a goal that has lagged far behind the rest of the world, has been a long-standing issue in our country."

A number of other local governments — and some private companies — have already introduced similar flexible schedules, including four-day weeks to help parents balance work and family life, and to allow other workers to do extra training.

It's hoped that measures like these could help encourage people to start families, and help both parents return to work after the birth of a child.

Koike also plans to introduce a new benefit allowing government employees to reduce their working time by up to two hours per day to make it easier to care for children.

The Japanese government is worried about the country's low birth rate. It's one of the reasons why many industries are facing labor shortages.

From April next year, companies in Japan will have to offer flexible work options for employees with young children, with new laws allowing people to work from home or have shorter working days.

Exercise 3.
Have a discussion based on the following questions.

1) What are your thoughts on Tokyo's government workers getting four-day weeks?
2) What impact do you think such measures could have on Japan's birthrate?
3) Would you like to have a four-day workweek?
4) If you worked a four-day week, what would you do with your extra day?
5) Do you think a four-day workweek will soon be the norm?

Exercise 4. Further Discussion
Have a discussion based on the following questions.

1) How flexible is your work schedule? Has this changed in recent years?
2) Would you say that you have good work-life balance?
3) How important do you think it is for parents to have flexible work schedules?
4) Do you know anyone who has had to choose between having a career and having a family?
5) How do you think the world of work will change over your lifetime?

(온라인): you are frozen

* 마이크 웅웅거리는 소음이 심하다: it's echoing a lot

* (선생님께 한 질문; 궁금해서) which country do most students come from?

which country are a majority of your students?
