Step 0. Intro
(인트로 설명부터 배울게 많습니다 ㅎㅎ)
So I was just doing some browsing online and I came across this article title
"I moved to South Korea to save money for a year. When I returned to the US, I hated it and ran back to Asia."
now when I first saw this title, I kind of had a feeling that I knew what I was gonna be reading about
It sounded somewhat familar to me for some reason
anyway but it got my attention so I ended up reading it
I actually ended up reading it twice
but not necessarily because I thought it was that interesting but because it had a lot of very interesting expressions that I wanted to go over with you
And that's why we're here that's why I'm doing this
uh just a few not a whole lot and if you want to go over the entire article yourself
please do I highly recommend it because as I always say the best way for you to learn English
the best way for you to improve your English is to consume content online
That's probably the best way to brush up on your English, to improve your English by yourself without actually interacting with foreigners anyway
so let's get right into it
Step 1. 표현 시작!
1) I knew I'd only be young once
She wanted to make that decision because it was risky and she wanted to make that risky decision because she was young because as she got older she knew that she would not be able to take those types of risks
2) money got tight fast
It's a very very simple and effective way to say that you don't have a lot of money to spend
money is tight fast
money got tight fast
got으로 표현한 이유는? It was a change that happened because when she had just graduated from college she was doing okay she was paying her bills she was paying her student loan and she was doing okay but then she took the risk to move to a higher living cost area but she moved she made that change and her living cost went up significantly and then money got tight fast
3) I took a sales job that sent me to Portland
It's just another way, interesting way to say that the job was in Portland
4) I split costs with roommates
알 수 있는 정보들:
She had more than one roommates
There were many costs that needed to be covered
유사 표현: we split a Bill
5) I was living paycheck to paycheck
key point: you are not able to save any money
If you are living paycheck to paycheck, it means you're not saving any money because any money that you earn is going out on bills and whatever that you're spending on and so you have nothing left by the time the next paycheck arrives you really don't have nothing left from your previous paycheck
6) getting around was no problem since public transit was accessible and incredibly affordable
- getting around: travelling from point a to point b / moving from one place to another / commute, go grocery shopping whatever..
- public transit !!! you don't necessarily say public transfortation
- accessible:you can use them easily, they're not hard to use, easy to use
- incredibly affordable: cheap
7) I was doing everything I could to keep my head above water
: to survive
8) to live on a shoestring budget
shoestring: 신발끈
shoestring budget: very small and little amount of budget
very common phrase !
9) Taking a job I'd already had in a place I'd already lived felt like a massive step backward
you're moving backward in terms of your career advancements
<-> you're moving forward
10) my money went much further in the country
basically what that means is that she was able to do so much more with the same amount of money
